Decisionally Impaired Adults

Participant Protections

Also known as: cognitively impaired adults, decisionally impaired

Adults whose ability to give informed consent is compromised by acute or chronic conditions and who require additional protections.

When research enrolls decisionally impaired adults, the IRB requires safeguards such as capacity assessment, LAR consent, subject assent, and ongoing reassessment of capacity.
