Central IRB (cIRB)

Governance

Also known as: cIRB, central institutional review board

An IRB serving multiple unaffiliated sites or sponsors as a single review body, often used in industry-sponsored research.

A central IRB consolidates ethical review for a multi-site study under one board, reducing duplication and inconsistency. Central and single IRB are overlapping concepts; sIRB is the federal term used by NIH and the Common Rule, while cIRB is more common in industry contexts.
