Principal Investigator (PI)

The individual responsible for the conduct of a research study at a given site, including protection of subjects and regulatory compliance.

The PI is responsible for the overall design, conduct, and reporting of a study at their site. Responsibilities include ensuring informed consent, following the approved protocol, maintaining records, reporting adverse events and deviations, and supervising study staff.

Under FDA regulations, PIs of investigational drug or device studies sign the Form FDA 1572 and accept specific obligations to the sponsor and FDA.
