Sponsor

The person or entity that initiates a clinical investigation and takes responsibility for its conduct.

A sponsor may be an individual, company, institution, or organization. Sponsor responsibilities under FDA regulations include selecting qualified investigators, monitoring the study, ensuring proper review and consent, maintaining records, and submitting required reports.

A sponsor-investigator is an individual who both initiates and conducts a clinical investigation, holding both sets of responsibilities.
