CROs perform some or all of a sponsor's trial-related duties under a written agreement. The sponsor retains ultimate responsibility for the quality and integrity of the data and for participant safety, but a CRO that assumes a duty takes on the regulatory obligations for that duty.

A company that provides clinical research services to sponsors on a contract basis, such as monitoring, data management, or regulatory submissions.
